3 COVID Commercial Cleaning Machines Building Managers are Investing in to Address Top Safety Concerns

As we make progress toward herd immunity and people start to journey from their apartments into offices, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues, building managers still need to do their part to help keep people safe. COVID-19 is not the only safety risk that building managers are concerned about – there are other health concerns to be aware of as well. These include bacteria and mold growth, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air, and lingering odors. Certain commercial-grade air purification solutions can destroy the COVID-19 virus, and help eradicate other issues you may encounter in your building.

Here are three powerful sanitization solutions building managers are considering investing in to protect commercial facilities.

UV technology

In a recent facility management study, Cleaning and Maintenance Management (CMM) cited UV disinfection technology as one of the top emerging technologies to adopt in the next 12 months. The most common application for it is in the form of UV-C light, but it is a method that must be used very carefully.

PYURE EVP Mike Hartmann shared some of these precautions in ISSA’s The Power of Light, featured in the global cleaning association’s March-April issue. “UV-C cannot be directly exposed to humans as it is proven harmful to skin and eyes, and prolonged and repeated use will damage materials in a treated room.” He goes on to point out, “UV-C light must come in direct sight with the treated air or surface, as areas shadowed from the light will not be treated.”

UV technology without UV-C light can also be used to sanitize commercial facilities. PYURE's unique UV technology emits hydroxyls and organic oxidants from its purifiers that naturally clean the air and sanitize every surface in a room – from hard-to-reach corners to the tiny crevices within a computer keyboard. One of the key advantages of this hydroxyl-generating UV sanitization solution is that it is safe to operate 24/7 in the presence of people, plants and animals – and will help facility management teams ensure the air in a building is always safe to breathe, and surfaces are safe to touch. Tested in a real-life environment, PYURE also reduced airborne SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19 – by 99% in 20 minutes and surface-bound SARS-CoV-2 was reduced by 99% in one hour.

Electrostatic sprayers

Electrostatic sprayers are far more effective than manual surface cleaning, but it’s time-consuming, can cause damage to certain materials or surfaces, and sprays irritants into the air, so it can only be used in vacant spaces and operated by someone equipped with proper PPE. Electrostatic sprayers are highly effective, and when paired with an air purification system like PYURE that removes VOCs and other harmful particulate matter (PM) from the air, the combination gives your building around the clock, full sanitization coverage.

HEPA filtration systems

According to the EPA, HEPA filters with the lowest Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values, or MERVS, on average remove 20% of dust particles ranging from 3.0 to 10.0 microns from the air, and the highest-rated filters reportedly remove 75% of dust particles between 0.3 and 1.0 microns from the air. These are effective in eliminating some inhalable PM from indoor air that can affect lung and heart health, including pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and smoke. Those with diseases, such as coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are at the highest risk.

Although HEPA filters capture some PM that can carry the COVID-19 virus, the virus itself is only 0.1 microns and can easily pass through HEPA filters, and into your building.

The benefits of PYURE

Unlike conventional air purifiers, PYURE’s sanitizing effects are not limited to the air that is pulled through the device. PYURE disperses organic oxidants throughout a space, dynamically sanitizing all air and porous and nonporous surfaces in a room. This enables PYURE devices to rapidly and safely kill the COVID-19 virus as well as other viruses, bacteria and mold; decompose volatile organic compounds; and neutralize odors, without harming its occupants or materials in the room.
