While both are primarily water, the rest of their content will vary and is what will cause the familiar odors associated with these products. Urine is made of up dissolved organic solids, with urea being more than half of these solids. This is an odorless and colorless solid that is used by our body to get rid of ammonia. We produce ammonia as part of metabolizing proteins. Feces is made of bacterial biomass, undigested matter, nitrogen-containing compounds, and other proteins. There are a variety of chemicals that will contribute to the smell of human waste. These can be split up into three separate groups for identifications, which makes understanding them a little easier. The three groups are: nitrogen-containing compounds, sulfur-containing compounds, and fatty acids. Out of all three, feces is going to have a higher concentration of fatty acids.
The most common type of fatty acids that is found in human feces is ethanoic, or Acetic acid. This is more commonly known as vinegar. While there is a lot of this acid in human feces, it actually doesn’t contribute a lot to the odor. Longer chain fatty acids, such as Valeric acid, or pentanoic acid, and butanoic, or butyric acid, are going to produce the odor. Butanoic acid is the acid that gives human vomit its unpleasant odor. Valeric acid, or pentanoic acid doesn’t smell much better, and when they are combined, they create an odor that is reminiscent of a barn. Para-cresol, another compound, also plays a role in the creation of this odor and is one main reason that feces have such a distinct and unpleasant smell. While human feces has a lot of fatty acids,
it’s the sulfur-containing compounds that cause so much of the bad odor we associate with feces. That’s because it takes a lot less of this compound for our noses to detect it, so we notice the smell of these compounds a lot sooner than we would notice the smell from fatty acids. Both methane thiol and hydrogen sulfide contain sulfur and are going to be easily recognizable by people, even when they are not very highly concentrated. Finally, nitrogen-containing compounds will smell different, depending on how concentrated they are. At low concentrations, skatole and indole can smell very floral, which is why they are used in some perfumes and are commonly found in flowers. Scientists believe that this is because different concentrations will bind to olfactory receptions in our nose, allowing us to smell the same compound differently, depending on how concentrated it is. Urine has a lot of nitrogen-containing compounds, which can all be affected by a person’s diet. Eating different foods, such as asparagus, can have a major impact on the odor of your urine. While urea is odorless, it will break down quickly into other compounds that contain nitrogen, such as Trimethylamine and ammonia. Together they can create a pungent and fishy smell. As the urea continues to break down, the compounds are continually created, resulting in a worse smell the longer that the urine is allowed to sit, and leading many people to wonder how to eliminate the smell ofurine. The following were observations regarding The Boss Generator;
1. We received the equipment on October 6 and provided you with a smoking room to remediate.
2. The processor (the MDU Unit) was left operational over night subsequent to cigarette smoke being added to the environment.
3. The following morning the room had been remediated providing it with a fresher smell.
4. Subsequently our cleaning staff provided you with an additional room on our smoking level that had been rented the prior evening. The room had been cleaned but it still had a residual smell of cigarette smoke. Our staff placed a unit (The Boss) in the space then providing the room with a fresher smell.
5. The equipment was returned on October 14th.

To Whom It May Concern:
This past holiday season, I experienced significant smoke damage in my home from an electrical malfunction in my oven, which occurred when running the oven cleaning cycle on a timer in the middle of the night?it appeared that the thermostat had stopped working, and the oven temperature just kept rising and rising. When the smoke detectors went off, I wakened and opened my bedroom door on the second floor and saw nothing but smoke in the hallway?I could not even see downstairs. There were no flames, just heavy smoke.
The smoke had traveled throughout the first and second floor of my home. A strong odor was detected in the air, and it went into all the closets on both floors, affecting most of the clothing in them. I opened the windows in the home to get cross ventilation and waited outside until sufficient smoke at exited so I could go back into my home. At that point, what remained was a foul odor from the smoke, which was from the protein in the oven as well as some of the plastic surrounding the oven.
The next day, when I went to a meeting, several people in the meeting noticed the smoke odor on my clothing and asked if I had been in a fire. This was an uncomfortable situation to say the least, as I was expecting to host family during the holiday season, not to mention the embarrassment experienced in client meetings. Anxious to remedy the odor problem I contacted Odorox Air Technologies (OAT) in Basking Ridge NJ to see if their Odorox equipment might be able to help my situation.
The guys contacted a local Paul Davis restoration firm, who agreed to operate the Odorox hydroxyl generators at my home to assist in the clean up. Felipe Rodriguez ("Phil") from Paul Davis Restoration & Remodeling followed the instructions given to him by Odorox personnel, and in a matter of just a few days successfully removed the smoke odor from my house (most of it had dissipated after just one day). Paul Davis had installed three of the Odorox machines on the two floors as well as a number of fans to move the air through the house.
Besides the obvious benefit of eliminating the smoke smell, I appreciated not having to leave my home during the clean up process?that is because the clean-up process does not use any ozone, which would not have been safe to be around..
It also was interesting to note that the local Maryland Paul Davis folks, having not heard of this hydroxyl technology, were very skeptical of its ability to work. When they came and installed the equipment (shipped to them by Emerald), they said that they could come back the next day with their own equipment to take out the smoke that the Odorox equipment didn't do. When they came back the next day, they were truly amazed at how quickly most of the odors had already been removed much faster than through their more traditional methods they became believers literally overnight. And given that this technology did not require that I vacate my home and dry clean my clothing, treat carpet, etc., they were more than impressed.
Unrelated to the smoke damage, Phil found some mold in my basement (it was from a water leak a few months earlier). I had mentioned that the Odorox equipment could kill the mold spores as well. So once the smoke cleanup was done, and following consultation with the Odorox personnel, I moved one of the Odorox units on the job to my basement to deal with the mold. I am pleased to report the mold is gone with the help of the Odorox and additional clean-up from the restoration crew.
